ORGANIC WINE

Sustainability has become increasingly relevant in wine culture conversations as wineries seek to promote the long-term health of the soil and improve the relationship of the vineyard and winery to its environment. Organic winemaking is just one facet of the complex issue of sustainability, which can also incorporate planting decisions, water usage, waste management, energy efficiency, recycling, carbon footprint, pest control, and even labor practices.

In the United States, a wine that is labeled as organic has been produced from organically grown grapes (i.e., grapes grown without pesticides) and contains no added sulfites. (In Europe and Canada, organic wines may contain sulfites.) The latter specification precludes many quality wines from this classification because so many rely on sulfites as a preservative and to prevent oxidation and a host of microbial problems (see here). Instead, many U.S. wines are labeled with the phrase “made from organically grown grapes,” which permits the addition of sulfites up to 100 parts per million (about half the amount in a typical serving of dried apricots). Additionally, organic refers only to how the grapes are grown, not the rest of the winemaking process. And with the exception of sulfites, the wine may contain other additives.
